Cake Decorating Golden Wonder

Earlier in the year I told you about how I had been invited to take part in Cake International spring show in March, I had planned to enter the decorative exhibit category again and also demonstrate and even hold an enclosed theatre demo… and what an experience it was.

We arrived at the crack of dawn to register and deliver my entry… I had spent two and a bit hours previous to that with my arm bent in ways it shouldn’t bend around to the back seat desperately trying to steady my entry so that it arrived in one piece.

To say it was a bumpy journey was a huge understatement, with both the cake and my nerves on the brink of collapse, it and I arriving at the NEC in one piece (just)!

As we entered the arena, my jaw had already hit the floor with just sneaky peaks of all the competitors’ work being lifted out of boxes and finishing touches being added.

I placed my entry in its spot and frantically checked and double checked that nothing had fallen of or become distorted on the journey.

I returned to the show later that day for my demos, and I could see the judges doing the tough job of scoring all the competition pieces.

I spent an hour on the cake International Magazine stand making nude chocolate people which certainly drew in the crowds, It was lovey to help those that are new to sugarcraft and swapping techniques with professional and well established cakeys.

Next I was dashing off to the enclosed theatre, where a long cue of people were patiently waiting for me to arrive. I had a full theatre which was so flattering, I couldn’t believe so many people were there to see me and my work. The 45 Minutes whizzed by and I managed to demo a bride and groom in modelling chocolate while uncomfortably speaking into a microphone that was echoing around the room. It’s weird enough when you hear yourself back on a recording let alone on full volume having to explain how to make bums and boobs.

I was so knackered after that I decide to head back to the hotel and rest up to be ready for another cake packed day.

The minute I stepped back into the show I headed straight for the competition area to first see what, if anything I had been awarded.

It was so very unexpected to see the word GOLD stamped on the card sat in front of my entry I was speechless and utterly shocked… I never thought I would be awarded another gold after my BFG entry on November.

So I can finally reveal my Spring Cake International entry… Wonderwoman!!

I wanted to make wonder woman as we had just celebrated international womens day and this year is her 75th birthday. With all the comic book characters being brought to life, and the wonder woman film due out this year It just felt right to choose this theme.

I based her on the 1980’s style and worked from a comic 35 years old (published the year I was born)

She was made from coloured cocoform (modelling chocolate) with edible paint used for details.

I wanted to create a sense of movement in the figure so used her famous pose with a gravity defying lasso above her head.

The comic book was made from flower paste and entirely hand painted. I wanted wonder woman to appear that she was flying out of the comic to save the world.

Here are just a few of my favourite from the show:

The standard was so very high as you can see with all the amazing entries….

I am so honoured to call Rhianydd Webb from Dragons & Daffodils a friend and yet again she pulled out all of the stops to deliver this amazing installation single handed…

The detail, and creativeness of this woman is just unbelievable, I can only hope and strive to be as admired and talented as her I the future.

I’m heading to the London spring show at Alexandra palace in a couple of weeks to enter again, demo and take part in the cake off (22/04/17 at 14.00-14.45) on the main stage with commentary by Rosie Cake Diva, Dawn Butler & Paul Bradford which I’m really excited about. I will post another blog soon with the results unless we fail miserably hehe.
