I am so very proud to be given the opportunity to showcase so much of my work in all of these fantastic magazines & book. The feeling you get when you walk down the aisles of a supermarket and spot your cake that you lovingly made on the cover of a magazine is indescribable. I am extremely grateful to all the editors that believe in my work enough to feature my designs, even though I am dyslexic and create more proof reading work for them, you are all very understanding, so thankyou.
I thought I would challenge myself and enter Kirsty Allsop’s Handmade Christmas Cake Decorating competition in 2015. I was so chuffed to learn that is was to be filmed in one of Kirsty’s houses in Devon.
It was a very long day with a timed competition. It was filmed in October so the winter hadn’t kicked in but we were in a huge house with heating, log fires and so many camera lights around us.With every corner of the house festively decorated including a life size polar bear standing on the staircase as you entered the house, even he was dressed in tinsel and pom poms. We were made to feel so at home in Kirsty’s house with both her and the production team looking after us all day long.
With out trying to be too distracted by everything that was going on around us, all 4 competitors worked so hard to finish our cakes in time. There were breakages and disasters and we were all sweaty messes by the end of the day.
While the cakes were being judged by Ceri Olofson of Olofson Design, we anxiously waited with tea and biscuits in Kirsty’s dining room.
With what seemed like a lifetime of waiting, we were invited back in to the kitchen and lined up behind our cakes. You could tell her decision was a tough one as Ceri had such lovely things to say about each cake.
I wasn’t really prepared for the announcement that was to come… “the winner is Laura” !!!
My mouth fell open with both shock and delight, I had never won anything in my life. I was handed a botanical wreath, which I’m happy to say is still hanging on my work cupboard ( it’s a little dry now) and an amazing wooden statue sporting a chef’s hat and holding a 2 tiered mini cake, which also sits in pride of place on my cake cupboard.
We all shared a bottle of champagne with Kirsty and chatted about all the lovely trinkets she had displayed around her house from previous craft shows.
This was most definitely a day I wont forget.
I was asked by the lovely Rose Dummer of Rosie Cake Diva & Rosie’s Crafty Kitchen to be a guest tutor on the Craft Channel in 2016. It was so much fun to be on live TV for 2 whole hours but challenging not to say anything I shouldn’t, my swear filter was on overdrive. Rose was a great host and always has so much energy it became very infectious. It was a great experience to show case my airbrush and sugar paste skills for beginners. I wonder if the viewers picked up on a few carry on moments with innuendos galore hehehe.
In the News
The Cake International cake competitions are the largest and most exciting in the world! Open for anyone – of any age and experience- to enter, this competition has launched baking careers and is truly the heart of Cake International. I took part in this competition that celebrates the ever-evolving skills and creativity of cake decorators across the globe in November 2016, which was my first ever competition. I wasn’t even sure I could do it as the guidelines are very strict. But I talked myself round and thought what’s the worse that could happen. A lot of blood sweat and tears went in to making this exhibit and I can honestly say that I could do no more by the end.
I was presented with a GOLD award for my work which I simply couldn’t believe. Everyone at the show had so many lovely things to say about my work which was all so overwhelming.
It was great to see that my cake was included on the BBC website too on a little write up about the show! Click on the BBC NEWS logo above to read it in full.
I was delighted to be invited to Scotland in 2016 to film a toy box tutorial for Paul Bradford & David Brice. I had a fab time and their team took great care of me. Check out my online tutorial on their website www.designer-cakes.com along with hundreds of other amazing tutorials.
My school friend Selina Lake has made a wonderful career for herself as an interior stylist. She styles a lot of shoots for magazines and many lifestyle companies. She is mostly known for her visually stunning series of books. Selina’s beautiful feminine style has become so popular she is working on her 8th book. I was delighted to be asked to make a cake for her book Outdoor living. She was looking for something fun, bold and unusual to be a feature in her Mexican fiesta scene. I created a Mexican embroidery cake in bright colours, constructing an intricate pattern using tiny strands of vermicelli. I was so excited to see my cake in a book.
Being a stylist, Selina frequently needs cakes she can use in her shoots, so am always on hand to supply her with what she needs. My work can be seen in Talking Tables summer and winter advertising campaigns as well as a range of greeting cards styled by Selina, using some of my cakes which are simply stunning. The only problem is that I can’t stand to write and send them out ! Thank you Selina for including me in your breath-taking work.
Calendar & Cards
Back in 2013 Author (& friend) Selina Lake was asked by Mollie Makes to produce a calendar for their readers.
Earlier that year, Selina had asked me to make some pastel themed cupcakes with Easter toppers for a country homes and living magazine shoot. I was so chuffed to see that as well as the cupcakes I made the other cakes she requested were featured on the cover of Country Homes & Living magazine for their anniversary spring edition.
The image of the cute pastel cupcakes that was featured in the magazine was then choosen by Selina as Aprils cover image for her Mollie Makes Calender.
It was funny as I didn’t even know about it until I went for coffee at a friends house and spotted it hanging on her wall!
I shrieked with delight and managed to get myself a copy.
Thank you Selina x
Selina Lake’s work and styling has gone from strength to strength, even being asked to style some celebration and wedding greeting cards for Abacus cards featuring my cupcakes and wedding cake http://www.abacuscards.co.uk/
