Mother’s Day was started in the early 20th century by an American, Anna Jarvis, born in 1864, she was 12 years old when she heard her mother, Ann Marie Jarvis, praying that she hoped someone would start a commemoration day to recognise the service mothers render to humanity in every field of life. Anna never forgot that prayer.

Two years after Ann Marie died, her daughter Anna, started an aggressive campaign to establish Mother’s Day in the US. Within a couple of years it caught on, and in 1914 it became an official holiday in the US. Many countries adapted the US holiday, changing the date to fit existing celebrations that honoured mothers. For instance, Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom is the fourth Sunday of Lent.

As a mother myself, I can appreciate the endless pressure motherhood puts on you, a pressure sometimes that can cause you to snap, shout and unintentionally burn the dinner day after day (sorry girls). For years I have bought gifts and cards for my mother which I know is appreciated but as I’ve become older, I feel they have lost meaning and much prefer to craft something myself which is much more personal.

Being a baker, what’s better then to bake a Mothers Day Cake as part of the celebration.

I made this chubby mummy cake for Cake Internationals  magazine , which was also featured on the cover, so pick up a copy for the full tutorial.

Mothers Day Cake Cake Decorating Classes

If  you don’t feel confident with making a cake to this level for your mum but want to give her something she will remember, then why not treat you mum to a cake decorating class at Life In Sugar.  Better still create even more of a memory and do the cake decorating workshop together. The day includes a delicious lunch, quality time together and the opportunity to learn skills that will last forever.  Gift vouchers are available presented in perfect little gift boxes.

So go on, pick some flowers, bake a Mothers Day Cake, make your own card or even write a letter to tell the woman that helped you be the person you are today how much she means to you.  Most of all, however you decide to celebrate Mother’s day, tell her you love her.
